A Summer Tote

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend!  I didnt want mine to end.  It was perfect in every way.  Friday night in all of my partying glory, I had a spontaneous craft night.  I dont know what it was but I was sitting on the couch thinking about dinner and decided I wanted to make something with my burlap and yellow fabric (yes, from the chair that I WANT TO FINISH).

Disclaimer: I do not have exact measurements on this project or a pattern.  I just created it based on looks only.  You may want a smaller bag, you may want a larger bag, it is completely up to you.

First,  I cut a piece of burlap I thought would be a good size for the exterior of the bag.

After I cut my burlap, I laid it out on my yellow fabric.  I cut the yellow fabric larger than the burlap because I wanted it to fold over the front of the bag and line the interior of the bag.  Here I measured approx 6-3/4″ for each fold over piece.

Cut away.  I struggle with cutting.  I cannot cut straight

Once I have laid it out on the table and ironed it, I hemmed the yellow fabric.   Lay the pattern side face down on the table since this is your interior.  Then fold your two flaps over and pin away.  These flaps (for my bag at least) were not sewed to the burlap.  Only the sides were sewn into the bag.  But make it however you want.
This part is tricky and since I was by myself, there are no pictures.  Once you have the burlap pinned and folded, fold your sides.  think of it as any other sewing project (I had to remind myself it was just like sewing a pillow and NOT as complicated as I was making it out to be).

Fold the left and right sides underneath the bag and fold in half so all you see is yellow fabric.  (I hope that wasnt confusing).  So now you have an inside out bag.  (Note the black arrows here just mean I did not attach these flaps to the burlap).

I used a zig zag stitch on this because I feel it holds up to the burlap a little better.

{Just to show a fun for you, unfun for me mistake…here is where I just noticed my burlap was crookedly cut.  Grumble.  Easy fix I suppose.  I just sewed the bag a little smaller}

For the strap, I took a long strip (since I wanted this bag to be a crossbody) and cut it to the length of my hip.  I hemmed it and them folded it in half so it was a thinner strap.

I am so in love with yellow and burlap.  I most certainly plan to use it more often and it will make a big appearence in my wedding (spoiler alert) (not not engaged yet, but we did pick out a ring!!)

What do you think?  I wore it around Saturday and thought it was the perfect bag to slump around with.  We went to a wing fest Saturday and it was perfect to throw flyers and cataloges in.

How was your weekend?

Have you had any spontaneous craft nights before?

I bought something else, but im keeping that one quiet! Its a gift and I dont know if that person reads this!!
I also tried to change the background on here, but Im not seeing it up. Im really not sure what is going on. grrr
